Children and young adults have been the most affected age group by the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. This makes schools, daycare centers and colleges/universities very important partners in trying to control the spread of 2009 H1N1 flu. The close proximity of young people and the difficulty ensuring good hygiene habits in these age groups create ideal conditions for the spread of the H1N1 virus. For this reason, it is important for staff and faculty to be well informed and have complete pandemic plans in place. It is also critical for all schools, daycare centers and colleges/universities to have policies and protocols in place to keep sick individuals out of those environments. These institutions will also be an important resource for disseminating information to children and families on preparedness planning and practicing good health habits.
