Seasonal Weight Limits? 

During the spring thaw, there are no seasonal weight limits on Waukesha County highways.

Cities, villages, and towns in Waukesha County may set seasonal weight limits on local roads. For more info, contact each city, town, or village (view example). Thank you!

About Oversize Load permits: 

• Oversize Load single-trip permit
Waukesha County Department of Public Works issues single trip oversize load permits for travel on County Trunk Highways (CTH) within Waukesha County.

Oversize Load annual permit
Contact Wisconsin Department of Transportation at 608-266-7320. This permit is not issued by Waukesha County Public Works.

Implements of Husbandry (IOH) 
• Agricultural Vehicles (Ag - CMV)
A permit is required for Category B vehicles and all other Implements of Husbandry (IOH) and Agricultural Vehicles (Ag - CMVs) with axle weights exceeding 23,000 pounds or gross weights exceeding 92,000 pounds.

Requirements - Implements of Husbandry, Agricultural Commercial Vehicles:

Height: There is no limit on height for IOH, but the operator remains responsible for ensuring clearance of all bridges and utility lines that are constructed to the proper height.

Length (IOH): Permit is required for:

• Single vehicles more than 60 feet.
• Two-vehicle combinations more than 100 feet.
• Three-vehicle combinations more than 100 feet at a speed lower than 25 mph
• Three-vehicle combinations more than 70 feet at a speed greater than 25 mph.

Length (Ag-CMV): A permit is required for:

• Single vehicle more than 45 feet
• Two-vehicle combinations more than 70 feet
• Three-vehicle combinations more than 100 feet at a speed lower than 25 mph
• Three-vehicle combination more than 70 feet at a speed greater than 25 mph

Weight: A permit is required for:

• Axle weighs 23,000 pounds and the GVW over 92,000 pounds.
• Tillage, planting, and cultivation equipment are exempt from the per-axle limitation on County roads.
• Potato harvesters are exempt from the per-axle weight requirement, but not exempt from GVW.
• For "incidental movements" from farm-to-field and field-to-field less than 0.5 miles, per-axle limit and GVW limit do not apply; no permit is required.
• For IOH being transported to and/or from an implement dealer for purposes of delivery, repair, or servicing within a 75-mile radius, per-axle limit and GVW limit do not apply; no permit is required

Width: Additional lighting and marking features are included for IOH that exceed 15 feet. There is no requirement for permitting based on a vehicle's width.

While operating on a highway, the following requirements apply:
IOH that exceed 15 feet or operate over the center line of the road when traveling will be required to add some lights and reflective material, if not already installed as original equipment

• Two flashing amber lights visible from the front and back placed 16 inches of the lateral extremities.
• On the back, red retro-reflective tape placed within 25 inches of the lateral extremities.
• On the front, two strips of yellow retro-reflective tape placed within 16 inches of the lateral extremities.
• Two red tail lamps (hard-wiring optional).
• A standard "slow-moving vehicle" (SMV) sign.
• During daylight hours, lighting requirements for IOH that exceed 15 feet or that operate over the center line of the road when traveling are not applicable if:

• The wide IOH is accompanied by an escort vehicle with hazard lights activated, and
• Two orange or red flags are attached to the rear of the IOH at the lateral extremities.

An IOH in excess of 22 feet, in addition to any lighting and/or marking required, must also be escorted by at least one vehicle with hazard lights activated.

• On two-lane roads the escort is the lead vehicle.
• On roads with two or more lanes with traffic going in the same direction, the escort vehicle is to follow the IOH.

• For "incidental movements" from farm to field or field to field under 0.5 miles, no escort is required.
• For an IOH operated or transported to or from an implement dealer for purposes of delivery, repair or servicing within a 75-mile radius, requirements for lighting, marking, and escort vehicles noted above apply.
