The Waukesha County GIS Viewer was developed to provide the public, municipalities and county departments with geographic information for use in land use planning, zoning, development and other activities.

The Land Information Office of Waukesha County uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to create and host spatial data and maps.  We join location-based information with other data for easy access to:

  • residents
  • businesses
  • federal, state, and local governments

We specialize in mapping, spatial analysis, and data visualization.  It is important to note other resources you can contact for specific land issues below. Our mapping data is not a substitute for an on-the-ground survey by a licensed surveying professional. Use it with caution. There are specific notes about accuracy and limitations found on our GIS Data Viewer, Open Data Site, and elsewhere.

Explore our GIS Hub to learn more about:

  • services and data we offer

Resources:

  • Looking for a survey of your property? use this GIS viewer guide to see if there is one on file on the Register of Deeds imaging system under the Plat of Survey document type. If you have a question on other document types, check the Register of Deeds page for guidance.
  • Questions about zoning and permitting regulations? Start with the Planning and Zoning Division.  It may depend on your particular jurisdiction.
  • The Environmental Health Division regulates septic systems and wells.
  • Each municipality in the county assigns their own building addresses. Contact your local clerk's office if you have a question about your new or existing address.
  • Go to the Tax Listing Query page for:
    • Tax bill and legal description information
    • Ownership
    • Legal descriptions
    • Assessment information (Assessors perform their work and keep more detailed records at the city/town/village level)

Many of our activities are guided by the Wisconsin Land Information Program. A portion of all fees from documents recorded in the Register of Deeds goes to support:

  • Free and open access to mapping data
  • Next Gen 911 support for public safety
  • A variety of programs to inform decisions and create efficiency

If you would like to learn more about what we do, read our current Strategic Plan.

In accordance with the State of Wisconsin's laws, including the open records laws under Chapter 19 of the statutes, Waukesha County government provides access to public records. It is the intent of Waukesha County government to provide access to certain public records in an electronic format via the internet as a service to the community, while protecting the privacy interests of citizens in the community, if possible. No information will be provided via the internet that is not otherwise made available to the public at or by Waukesha County government offices.

In the instance of land information, names of property owners shall be available via the internet when attached to individual, identifiable land parcels. At this time, the ability to search for properties by owner name will not be provided, as the limited need for this service does not counter related privacy concerns.
