The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has awarded Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land the 2018 Recycling Excellence Award for Innovation for the new interactive recycling education exhibits at Retzer Nature Center’s Environmental Learning Center.
“We are honored to be recognized for this collaborative project,” said Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow. “The design of the new space allows us to incorporate displays on recycling, waste reduction, and water conservation seamlessly into the existing ecology exhibits. We can now offer innovative S.T.E.M. curriculum to school groups and visitors.”
Within the new space is a multi-room, hands-on recycling exhibit called “Your Actions Matter”. Visitors are able to explore how their actions matter and how they can be environmental stewards. The unique interactive features include a home and yard, materials recovery facility, re-manufacturing center, and local market. The exhibit also builds on partnerships with the Waukesha School District and Carroll University by being part of the new cooperative K-12 comprehensive environmental curriculum.
The DNR Recycling Excellence Awards Program is designed to encourage and reward communities for outstanding efforts, innovation, and performance in recycling. For more information about the DNR Recycling Excellence Awards Programs, visit https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/recycling/Awards.html
