The Waukesha County Board of Supervisors is the legislative branch of county government and operates under powers granted by the state legislature. The Waukesha County Board consists of 24 part-time supervisors and one full-time county board chair who are elected by districts to two-year terms in even numbered years. From its members the board elects a chairperson, first vice-chairperson and second vice-chairperson as officers of the board. Generally, the county board meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. in room C350 of the Waukesha County Courthouse. Much of the county board’s work is conducted through the board's seven standing committees: the executive, finance and personnel committees deal with administrative policy matters, whereas the judiciary and law enforcement, health and human services, land use, parks and environment and public works committees are concerned with policy matters affecting public services. Resolutions and ordinances are reviewed at standing committees and forwarded to the full board for approval. Committees also review reports from county departments as well as outside agencies and the public. Additionally, county supervisors serve on boards, commissions and requests for proposals selection committees.
One of the major responsibilities of the board is to adopt the annual county budget. In September of each year the county executive presents a recommended budget for the following year. The county board’s finance and standing committees review and recommend changes to the budget. On the second Tuesday of November the county board meets at 9 a.m. to adopt the next year’s budget.
