WIC Nutrition Program

The Women, Infant and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program is a Federal Program that provides food and nutrition information to pregnant, postpartum, breastfeeding women, infants and children under the age of 5. In Waukesha County, WIC is administered through the Waukesha County Public Health Division.

Participants Receive:

  • Food vouchers for milk, eggs, fruits and vegetables (fresh, frozen or canned), whole wheat/whole grain foods, cereal, peanut butter, fruit juices, dried beans and peas, and infant formula, infant cereal and baby food fruit, vegetables and meats.

Since the beginning of the WIC Program, the food benefits have been issued via paper checks. The checks are printed with a message indicating the type and quantity of WIC approved foods that can be purchased with the check at WIC authorized stores. Starting in 2015, Wisconsin will begin converting to an electronic benefit card, called eWIC. The family food benefit will be loaded on a card that can be used at WIC authorized vendors. The family can use the benefit throughout the month as food items are needed. Checking out at the register will become more hassle free for cashiers and WIC families as the register will be programmed to recognize the foods that are  WIC approved. eWIC is scheduled to begin in Waukesha County in September 2015.

who is eligible for WIC?

Resident of the State of Wisconsin

  • Pregnant and postpartum women and children up to the age of five who are income eligible and have a health or nutrition need.
    • Income guidelines are set by the Federal Government and change each year. These guidelines are based on both the number of people in the household and the gross income amount before taxes are taken out.

  • Foster children under the age of five. 

How do I get WIC benefits?

Your WIC Appointment

For the appointment you are required to bring:

  • The person being certified.
  • Current proof of income-examples include:
    • Paycheck stub for all working in the household or a letter from your employer.
    • Tax return if self employed
    • Unemployment form or copy of check
    • Notice of Decision letter for food stamps, medical assistance or W2
    • Social Security check or an Award Letter
    • For foster children: letter from caseworker with amount and family size
  • Identification for the persons being certified and for the guardian-examples include:
    • Drivers license
    • Birth certificate
    • WIC Id (purple folder)
    • Infant crib card, bracelet or hospital certificate.

        NOTE:Social Security cards cannot be used as identification

  • Proof of residency-examples include:
    • Lease
    • Recent piece of mail with your address
    •  Recent bill with your address
  • Proof of Pregnancy ~ examples include:
    • Official Pregnancy test results (no home test kits)
    • Ultrasound picture with name and date
    • Documentation from health care provider
    • Prescription for prenatal vitamins
  • Immunization records if available


At the appointment there will be:

  • Blood testing for hemoglobin (iron)
  • Weight and height measuring
  • Nutrition assessment and counseling
  • Food vouchers issued

Walk-in Clinic for Newborns (under 6 weeks) and Postpartum Women

Walk in clients are seen on a first come-first serve basis

           10:30 am - 12:00 pm-Tuesdays (Not available on holidays, please call ahead to ensure availability)
