ZONING PERMIT – AIRPORT HEIGHT

WHEN: An applicant is proposing structures in the jurisdiction of the Waukesha County Height Limitation Zoning Ordinance.
WHY: To regulate and restrict the height of structures, including temporary cranes, and objects of natural growth in the vicinity of the Waukesha County Airport/Crites Field in order to protect and promote the health and safety of people living and working in the vicinity of the Airport.
WHO: The staff of the Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use – Planning and Zoning Division reviews the Zoning Permit, and if approved, mails the issued permit to the Building Inspector, or directly to the applicant in the City of Waukesha. See Staff Who Can Help.
HOW: Applicant must submit a complete application packet and fee.
A COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKET SHALL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
- Application for Zoning Permit for Development within the jurisdiction of the Waukesha County Airport Height Ordinance.
- A scaled and accurate site plan or plat of survey.
- Written FAA and/or Bureau of Aeronautics approval, if required.
- Heights and elevations of proposed structures, including temporary cranes.
- An accurate set of building plans and a grading plan may also be required.

VARIANCE OR APPEAL
- An appeal of a decision of the staff of the Planning and Zoning Division must be made to the Waukesha County Board of Adjustment within twenty (20) days of the staff’s decision.
- The Airport Manager and/or the Airport Commission may also have to review and approve of the request.
TIME:
- An applicant can anticipate the zoning permit will take approximately two (2) weeks upon submittal of a complete application packet, fee, and FAA approval, if required.
- Note, the timeline may take longer if BOA or Airport Commission approval is required.
NOTES:
- Written approval by the FAA and/or the Bureau of Aeronautics for the structure shall be submitted to the Planning and Zoning Division prior to the issuance of the Zoning Permit.
- A site inspection and evaluation by the Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use – Land Resources Division may be required for questions on erosion control practices and/or impact on surface water drainage. A site drainage plan and Storm Water Permit may also be required. Contact the Planning and Zoning Division and they will contact the Land Resources Division for assistance. See Staff Who Can Help.
- A Minor Grading Zoning Permit may also be required.
- An inspection of the site may be required.
- A Conditional Use Permit and Site Plan/Plan of Operation Permit may also be required.
