Diversion suspends traditional criminal justice proceedings by giving offenders the chance to engage in alternative programming. These efforts are aimed at rehabilitation, allowing offenders a second chance to have their charges reduced or dropped, given they satisfy a number of predetermined requirements.
Addressing a need in Waukesha County
Young adults ages 17-22 make up a significant portion of the cases prosecuted by the Waukesha County Office of the District Attorney. The volume and complexity of these cases have been increasing every year, resulting in greater court costs, decreased property values and overcrowded jail populations.
The success of 180° Diversion means fewer caseloads within the criminal justice system, saving taxpayer money. It also means that the troubled young people of Waukesha County will be better prepared to become healthy, positive and productive members of our society.
