Five Tips to Help Your Valentine’s Day Flowers Look Their Best and Last Longer

Posted February 14, 2022

  1. Remove any leaves on the lower portion of the stems before putting the flowers in a vase. Any foliage that is underwater in the vase will get diseased.
  2. Before placing flowers in a vase, make a fresh cut one-inch up the base of the stem. Cut it at angle. This will improve water absorption.  It will also prevent the end from resting directly on the bottom of the vase.  When making the cut, place the stems underwater. This will avoid getting an air bubble in the flower stem.
  3. If you receive a packet of flower preservative with your flowers, use it.   This preservative provides nutrients, kills bacteria, and balances the acidity of the water for good floral color.
  4. Re-cut the stems every couple of days and remember to change the water in the vase daily.
  5. Place flowers in a cool location away from direct sunlight and warm drafts.
