Dementia Friendly Muskego
Mission
Dementia Friendly Elmbrook is creating a community where those with dementia will be enabled to live as independently as possible and continue to be engaged in community life.
It involves: educating the public about dementia and how to positively interact with individuals with dementia, providing training to businesses and service providers, providing public screening events for early detection of dementia, and building a response system that can safely and effectively work through crisis situations a person living with dementia and their caregivers/families may experience everyday.
Components of a Dementia Friendly Community
- Dementia Awareness Presentation
- Multiple presentations have been offered in the Muskego community for various civic and social organizations
- Dementia Friendly Business Training
- Business trainings have been provided for the businesses listed below
- Early Detection
- Community Memory Screen Events held annually at the Muskego Public Library
- Dementia Caregiver Support Groups
- Engagement activities for Individuals with Dementia and the Caregivers/Families
- Dementia Crisis Training for First Responders
- Some Elmbrook area Police, Fire and Paramedics have attended Crisis Intervention Team training provided through the Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services in partnership with NAMI of Waukesha County.
- Additional training specific to being dementia capable is being discussed
- Dementia Education in the Schools
- The State of Wisconsin DPI has an established curriculum on dementia that schools can elect to teach as a part of the health classes in middle and high school
- Dementia Resources
- In Waukesha County, individuals with dementia, their caregivers and families can contact the ADRC at (262)548-7848 or the Alzheimer’s Association at 800-272-3900
Dementia Friendly Community Presentations
If your organization would like to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and other types of types of dementia, as well as how to help those with dementia, we offer a free one-hour presentation for interested residents, businesses or organizations.
Dementia Friendly Business Training
A growing number of businesses and organizations including: banks, stores, shops, restaurants, churches, etc. are training their employees to become dementia friendly by learning how to recognize signs and symptoms of dementia; communicating with individuals with dementia and working through possible challenging situations. Employees will learn about services, programs and resources available in their community and how to create a dementia friendly business environment. Those businesses that train the majority of their employees will be awarded a Purple Angel decal to display in their windows so people with dementia & their caregivers can be confident they will be conducting business in a dementia friendly environment.
Dementia Friendly Coalition
The dementia coalition consists of community members, business owners and operators, care providers, caregivers, and people living with dementia. The coalition meets quarterly while work groups meet on a more frequent basis. The current work groups include: marketing, community education, and the forum event.
