Counseling and Education

A variety of counseling, training and educational programs are available in Waukesha County through the National Family Caregiver Support program. In addition to the programs described below, specialists from the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Waukesha County (ADRC) can provide presentations to small or large groups. For additional information on the sessions described below, or to arrange an informational group presentation, call the ADRC at (262) 548-7848.

Caregiver Seminar: The annual Family Caregiver Seminar is an annual event usually held in late Spring. The conference, a collaborative effort of the ADRC and community organizations, includes workshops and general sessions related to caregiving issues. Caregivers have an opportunity to learn more, network with other caregivers, visit resource tables and relax away from home.

Intermission: Are you a caregiver for an older person and looking for a special outing that you can experience together? The Caregiver Intermission Program is a collaborative program developed by the ADRC, Elmbrook Church Senior Adult Ministry, and Elmbrook’s Children’s Ministry. This is an intergenerational program, which gives the family caregiver and their care receiver an opportunity to share a meaningful and loving event together. Each will benefit from the shared love, laughter and creative activities.

Taking Care of You …Powerful Tools for Caregivers: Being a caregiver for a loved one is often challenging and stressful. Responsibilities may seem overwhelming and it is difficult at times for caregivers to maintain their own emotional well-being. Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a six-week curriculum that:

  • Helps caregivers build effective communication skills
  • Helps reduce personal stress
  • Helps set important and realistic goals
  • Helps caregivers learn how to make tough decisions
  • Helps caregivers communicate effectively with medical staff
