The Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Unit (Metro) was formed in 1985 when the Sheriff and many Waukesha County Chiefs of Police recognized a cooperative effort to fight drugs and drug dealing was the best for the community. Waukesha County Sheriff Department is the administrator of the program and has been since its inception.

The drug threat to Waukesha County has changed and continues to change through the years. Marijuana and Cocaine, our biggest problems in 1985, remain the most consistently seized narcotics in 2008. A rapidly emerging drug threat to our quality of life is the combination of synthetic opiates and heroin.
Heroin once the dead end drug for middle aged junkies is now seen in accidental overdoses in County teenagers. This has come about with the introduction of synthetic opiates, most notably Oxycontin. Oxycontin a legitimate controlled pharmaceutical painkiller, stolen or diverted it is then consumed by young persons who come into possession of it. Those individuals who like the effect of this drug often switch to heroin, which is much less expensive.
Metro is working closely with many local, state, and federal agencies to attack the heroin problem.
The Metro Unit earned recognition for its productivity with an ‘Outstanding Achievement Citation’ in 2006, ‘Officer of the Year’ in 2007, and ‘Investigation of the Year’ in 2008, by the Wisconsin Narcotics Officers Association.
