WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN (WIC):
What is WIC?
The Women, Infant and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program is a Federal Program that provides food and nutrition information to pregnant, postpartum, breastfeeding women, infants and children under the age of 5. In Waukesha County, WIC is administered through the Waukesha County Public Health Division.
Participants Receive
- Food vouchers for milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, peanut butter, dried beans and peas, tuna, carrots, fruit juices, and infant formula.
- Nutrition education and information.
- Breastfeeding support.
- Referrals to other Public Health, community, and health services as needed.
Who is eligible for WIC?
- Resident of the State of Wisconsin
- Pregnant women or new mothers, infants up to age one, or children up to the age of five who are income eligible.
- Income guidelines are set by the Federal Government and change each year. These guidelines are based on both the number of people in the household and the gross income amount before taxes are taken out. Click on WIC Income Eligibility Table to view current income levels.
- Foster children under the age of five.
Where do I go?
The main WIC office is located in the Public Health Center at 615 W. Moreland Blvd, in Waukesha. The phone number is 262 896-8440.
How do I get WIC benefits?
Call 262 896-8440 for a certification appointment to determine eligibility.
For the appointment you are required to bring:
- The person being certified.
- Current proof of income
- Paycheck stub for all working in the household or a letter from your employer.
- Tax return if self employed
- Unemployment form or copy of check
- Notice of Decision letter for food stamps, medical assistance or W2
- Forward Card (Title 19 card for medical assistance, Healthy Start or Badger Care).
- Identification for the persons being certified and for the guardian
- Drivers license
- Birth certificate
- Old WIC folder
- Infant crib card, bracelet or hospital certificate. (Social Security cards cannot be used as identification.
- Proof of residency
- Lease
- Recent piece of mail with your address
- Bill
- Proof of Pregnancy
- The completed WIC questionnaires
- Immunization records if available
At the appointment there will be:
- Forms to fill out
- Blood testing
- Weight and height measuring
- Nutrition assessment and counseling
- Food vouchers issued
